My iPod was at nadir a couple of weeks ago when I (shamelessly) asked my almost-14 year old son to download ‘Moves Like Jagger’ by Maroon 5 and put it in my iPod.  This lapse of judgement, questionable download, and resulting modification to my (relatively Top-40 free) iPod is an example (I think) of the kind of temporary insanity people experience when they are under a bit of stress.  Like seriously – I think we can write this up as a case study and get it published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

While I thought that some mindless pop, dancefloor/Jagger visualization would help prep me for the couple of yucky files I’m working on, I was wrong.  It took a song that was already in my iPod to get me ready for work:

Yup – a little AC/DC is totally going to help rock your morning commute be it on-foot or by bus.  Indeed, many have already witnessed me striding through the ‘hood with increased confidence and conviction.  The biggest benefit is that when you arrive, you’ll be ready to face any gross file/non-collaborative colleague/unreasonable deadline your workplace throws at you.  Thun-DER!

I passed this tip onto my cool colleagues and convinced them to try it.  The result?  Epidemiologist K reported that she put it on as she was approaching the Pasture on-foot, and that by the time she made it to the building she was ready to rip the door off the building and rock. Her. Work.  Thun-DER!

Other colleagues reported similar effects.  AND the video itself inspired at least one Hallowe’en costume among our team.  Thun-DER!

More importantly, we have reached a sample size of four who have reported positive and productive effects from listening to Thunderstruck as part of the morning commute.  Now I’m asking YOU to try it.  I’m visualizing a more productive and efficient Ottawa with a little AC/DC in their iPods!  And when we reach a sample size of 1,500 – we’ve got a totally respectable sample size for publication!  Thun-DER!

Leave a comment when you try it!  Other song suggestions are of course welcome – what gets you to work?

For those who have a lengthy commute, I recommend the Sountrack for Iron Man 2. Nothing but ackadacka.*

    *for those in the know.

Hard to go wrong with some AC/DC, but for those looking for variety may I suggest the Immigrant Song, if only to move you from just wanting to rock your work to fully wanting to invade and conquer it.

Thun-DER indeed. A confession…Until recently, I considered myself a nerd. Nothing thrilled me more than a Scrabble triple word score with something like “equine” on a Saturday evening. Since I downloaded Thunderstruck, things have changed. I can nearly play the opening guitar solo on my violin and if my f’ing beer swilling noisy neigbour ever ticks me off again, there’s going to be hell(s bells) to pay! “Tiny Dancer” still follows Thunderstruck on my iPod but I’m bustin’ out of my nerdy shell.

Well, Hells Bells – ya gotta start somewhere! Although Scrabble and a triple word score with ‘equine’ is a respectable way to spend a Saturday night! Please post the video of you, your violin and your beer swilling noisy neighbour on YouTube!

Hey, JPenn. While “Moves Like Jagger” has been propelling me on several runs lately, I do agree with the AC/DC as most of my run tunes are rock. I would suggest also “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Honky Tonk Woman” in addition to Baba O’Reilly and maybe you should listen to “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” on the way home!ST

Hey, Jen. Thunderstruck rocks! Have to say that my getting psyched list includes “Final Countdown” by Europe, “Under Pressure” by Queen/David Bowie, Top Gun Anthem followed by “Mighty Wings” by Cheap Trick (Highway to the Danger Zone by Loggins is waaay overrated), and Meat Loaf Bat Out of Hell II and III, which are best played loudly when dropping off adolescent teenagers at school in order to teach them what embarassment really feels like.
